House Painters Pro Tips: Filling Gaps, Cracks, Nail Holes

Sep 30

A seamless finish is one of the hallmarks of a great painting job. We previously discussed the Defined Levels for Surface Prep needed to achieve different grades of finishes. What filling products are you using to fill cracks, gaps, and nail holes?

We'll be discussing these products and how to use them in this post. These tips will help you achieve a high-quality finish that will make professional house painters Denver envy.

Filling Gaps

You may need to fill in gaps before you can paint.

You can find them in interior paint jobs where ceilings meet walls, inside corners of walls, wood trim meets walls, inside corners of walls and inside corners where wood trim meets wood trim (i.e. You can find them on doors/window frames, baseboards, etc.

You could locate them in exterior paint jobs, where trim meets siding or the body of the home, at the butt-joints of longer siding runs, and inside corners.

No matter if you are looking from the outside or inside, these areas will require more attention than any other type. The product you'll need the most of, painters' caulk is it. Because they use so much of it, most painting crews have at least two cases.

Painters' caulk can be so affordable, right? A tube of basic paintable caulking with a 25-year guarantee can be purchased for just $1. You don't have to worry about it lasting more than a few weeks. It might last a while in a controlled environment with no temperature or humidity change, but it will soon begin to pull away from your joint.

Caulking can have a huge impact on the quality and life expectancy. For both exterior and interior painting projects, I tend to buy the most expensive caulking available. They flex more, shrink less and resist cracking better than other brands. I could spend a boring and technical explanation on shrink coefficients. I doubt that anyone really cares about caulking. So, I will just say that the best product for your project is worth every penny. Brand is not important. There are many high-quality caulking manufacturers that are readily available. If you plan to paint over it, make sure it is paintable.

TIP! To ensure that your expensive caulking does not fail, prime all bare substrate surfaces prior to applying caulking.

Filling cracks

Joint compound is the best material to repair interior walls like plaster and drywall. Pre-mixed joint compound is available in 1-gallon and 5-gallon containers. You can also get it in powder form, which can be mixed to the amount that you need for crack repair.

You can purchase joint compound powder in several fast-drying options (20 minute, 45-minute and 90 minutes), depending on how quickly your work can be done before the mix sets up.

Wood filler is the best material for interior doors, window frames, and trim surfaces that are typically made of wood. Wood fillers are as hardy as the surrounding wood and can be sanded or drilled. They can also be painted, stained, or painted. This is the perfect solution to miter joints in trim.

A high-quality caulking will work well on exterior surfaces. It can be moved and flexed as the weather changes. You may want to repair wood more seamlessly if you have the right tools and skills.

Filling nail holes

You can fill nail holes in interior walls with shrink-free spackling. Simply overfill the hole slightly and then sand it smooth once it is dry. Wood filler is the best way to fill holes in wood trim.

A good caulking can fix nail holes on exterior surfaces just like cracks and gaps.

Before your next paint Denver project, make sure to fill in all cracks and holes. It will cost you more time and money, but it will make your paint job look great.
